Larsen Tented Camp is a beautiful eco camp located within Samburu national reserve on the east, along the Uaso Nyiro River; the camp has unique and comfortable tented accommodation that are beautifully designed under shady trees overlooking the river. Larsen's Tented Camp is a decent safari camp situated on the east of Samburu National Reserve; the lodge was named after Erik Ole Larsen and is owned by Wilderness Lodges Limited. It’s a small camp with only 20 tents that are nicely spaced along the river with stunning view of the surrounding landscapes and wildlife drinking water.
The Samburu National Reserve is famous for its huge number of wildlife that include the Big Five, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, Oryx, crocodiles, birds among other wildlife and attractions in the region.
Accommodation is in 20 nicely decorated tented rooms, all named after different types birds; the tents are spread along the river and are slightly raised above the ground to offer stunning area view, with canvas flaps that can be open to offer a 180° view. The rooms are nicely decorated with wooden floors, African inspired furniture and artifacts; each tent have a lounge/veranda, a comfortable king/queen/twin size bed, a mosquito net, a writing desk, a bathroom, a complimentary minibar and a dressing area.
Meals at Larsen's camp are prepared from locally fresh organic products and spices, the menu combines African and western cuisines with additional fun dishes for kids. The meals are served at the dining area or at your private veranda or on a private nicely set candle lite table along the river (on request).
Additional hotel facilities at Larsen’s include a swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar and lounge area with Wi-Fi connection, a gift shop, an open air Jacuzzi, miles of wilderness to explore, a river that attracts animals close to the lodge, a camp fire area, a beauty and health Spa. Additional services include laundry and baby-sitting services.
Activities would include day and evening game drives, nature walks along the river or the grasslands, mountain biking, camel rides, beauty and spa treatments, cultural tour to the Samburu villages, bird watching, swimming, fly safari, star-gazing and sun-downers bush and riverbank dinning.
The best and easiest way to get to Larsen’s Camp is via chartered flight or scheduled flights to Oryx Samburu airstrip then a road transfer to the camp. By road, its approximately 5½ hours’ drive from Nairobi.
Larsen camp is located on the northern parts of Kenya , the region is said to be semi desert; the weather is hot all year round with day temperatures getting up to 33°C and cool nights of about 17°C , the short rains are in March/April and November/December.
Other attractions near Larsen’s Camp would include going on a safari to the neighboring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Buffalo Springs National Reserves and Shaba national park; Mountain climbing at Mount Kenya and mount Lololokwe, Visit the Chimpanzees refugee center at Ol Pajeta and other private conservancies in the region.
Larsen’s Camp is located in the middle of a very remote area; there are no modern shops or market places nearby; so it’s advised to buy all your essential items in major towns before traveling to Larsen’s Camp. The closest big town is Nanyuki, its 2½ hours’ drive from the Lodge.
